Every city in this world has its own identity. All these cities have different names along with their original names. In India there are several instances – Jaipur as Pink city. Kolkata as City of Joy and the list is long.  There are other cities of the world that have different names and we are hardly aware of these identities.

Athens is the name of the cit y which was given by Aristophanes.  Ion (a violet) was one of the great King of Athens and his four sons were gave names to four Athenian Tribes and Greece called Ionia; Athens was the ‘City of Violet Crowns.’

Lloyd George, former Prime minster of the coalition government after World War I made generous grants of honours in a blatant fashion. Three people connected with a prominent South Wales newspaper were among the recipient.  Hence, Cardiff got the name which is a punning allusion to a poem by James Thomson in the same name.

Oxford in United Kingdom has this title. City got its name from Mathew Arnold’s Thyrsis: “the sweet city with her dreaming spires.”  Sometimes literature or literary works can evoke things beyond our expectations.

Montreal in Canada is named with this title with all the valid reasons.  The streets of this city are named after Saints. There is another city in U.S.A bears the same name – Salt Lake City of Utah due its MORMON inhabitants.

The US city of Philadelphia bears this tag. The city has also the etymological support to this title of this name. Greek Philadelphia means brotherly love.
