Music: hype or by choice for teenagers?

Nov 6, 2014

Just the other day, one of my friends uploaded a picture of a legendary music artist and put up a caption saying how he was the best on a social networking site, which was surprising since I’m all our years of friendship, I had never heard her mention him or even remotely hint that she even listens to the genre of music that he is famous for.
I don’t quite know why she chose to do such a thing, that won’t probably benefit her a lot, and choosing to ignore it, I probably never will.
But even as I choose to not question my friend, this got me thinking. It wasn’t the first time that such a thing had happened in my observation and it certainly won’t be the last. But why is it that someone who doesn’t know a thing about genres like rock or metal portray to know so just because they need to impress a person or a bunch of people for that? Have we become so inferior with ourselves that we believe our interests have become too boring to please the society? For that matter even our friends? Isn’t the whole purpose of friendship based on the fact that you’re supposed to accept one another irrespective of the differences you’ll have?
Today, though every other teenager listens to music, be it from Bollywood to Pink Floyd, it is only very few who really understand it. It is only very few who have their own taste and actually research what they’re listening to or even for that matter know what they’re listening to while at it. Such are the people who do not listen or pretend to like a song just because its on the top of the music charts or his/her friend recommended it to him, but because he religiously follows the particular artist/band and likes their music for being soulful and meaningful. Although there are more people who unknowingly have formed an ignorant taste in music that they themselves might not be aware of, there are some who have stuck to being themselves and still continued to listen to the type of music they prefer.
And that’s the way it is supposed to be. Each one of us is unique in our own way, so why not when it comes to this beautiful thing called music which is made with the very purpose of relating with you in the most personal of ways? The only solution therefore would be to gracefully accept the fact that every one of us different from the others and so will our taste in music be.
After all, music doesn’t choose us, we choose the music we want to hear.
