Effects of radioactivity

Jun 26, 2014

Nuclear power has its own pros and cons.

It is considered to be a “Climate friendly” Energy source, because it generates electricity without realising CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the air. There are some health hazardous with nuclear power, Including the possibilities that a nuclear power plant may accidently release radiation in the atmosphere. Or can be targeted for terrorist attacks. And again there is radioactive waste to take care of.

Nuclear meltdown
The nuclear fission creates massive amount of energy from a very small amount of uranium. In a nuclear power plant the reaction is controlled with absorption roads unlike a nuclear bomb. Nuclear bomb is an uncontrolled chain reaction.
The risk in a controlled reaction is a “Meltdown”The defect in the cooling system of a reactor results in the melting of the core of a reactor. and this results in release of radiation.

We are continuously exposed to natural radiation which comes from the outer space and even the ground below us. Man made radiations are used to find defects in the bones or in treatments. In most people low level controlled radiation does not resolve any detectable health problems. however large amount of radiation can damage cell on the DNA level and can cause cancer.

Cancer due to radiation

Environment is also affected to a very large extent. The water used for cooling the reactor is taken from the local source and after the use the water which contains chemicals and heavy metals are released back in the source. This disrupts water life and plants within the waterway.
According to the environment Literacy council, ionized radiation that occurs from nuclear material may result in weakening of seeds and frequent mutation.

Alternate suggested source of energy is the wind energy.

wind energy

Wind energy is an alternate, efficient, free and never ending source of energy.

The advantages are as follows-
– It is free and does not cause greenhouse gases or other pollutants.
– Even with its massive size it takes up very less area and the land around can be used .
– Reaches the remotest areas.
– Single households to small towns and villages can make good use of wind turbines.

The cons of wind energy.
– The wind strength can be from zero to storm.
– Interrupts with natural beauty.
– they are noisy and cannot satisfy the demand for huge amount of energy.

There are pro and cons but we need to understand what is good for us and the future.
