Can We Really Dream Of Swachh Bharat ?

Feb 16, 2015

It is of utmost importance that Modi sustains the public awareness campaign at the high level he has begun until the objective is achieved. Through speeches and commercials on television and radio, he must continually exhort citizens to change their habits. He must also cajole state chief ministers, prominent politicians from all parties and film and sports stars to do the same because it won’t be very easy to gain the target because of the following reasons:
Garbage bins: it is claimed that people won’t litter here and there if the proper availability of garbage bins is introduced. It is possible that the proper placement of garbage bins will stop people from littering in restricted areas. But, wait a second! When we have all our footpaths covered with our beloved sabzi-wala, macchi-wala, fruit-wala, cattle and so on… do we actually have any places left for any dustbin…??

Clean Rivers: India is a land of Rivers, and it is our responsibility to keep all our rivers, ponds and other water bodies clean. We are not at all supposed to throw any trash in them. But, what about our auspicious “Visarjans” and those so called “Death Rituals”? This is for sure going to pollute the water bodies to their core. Or are ‘they’ convinced not to do so?

Toilets: yes of course we should have toilets made in all the houses. Availability of toilets will not only facilitate defecation but will also add a sense of comfort while excreting. But, in a country that has its very own world’s largest slum and people don’t even have place to live in I wonder how they will afford to proper toilet…?

Sulabh Sauchalaya: yeah, our very own public toilet. ‘They’ say construction of public toilets at public places will stop the common people from facing problems and they won’t pee on those lovely graffiti oriented walls which clearly says “ yaha mootna mana hai”. Sounds like a miracle isn’t it? But, I think the more important is to clean all those existing smelly toilets which can be found from miles away instead of making new public “odor booths” everywhere.

Recycle, Reuse and Donate: we should never ever throw trashes anywhere, we should either give it to someone who needs it, or should Recycle and Reuse it. But, can someone please let me know where the “paan ki peek” gets Recycled, or there is someone who really needs it??

Swachh Bharat: the recent proposal of government to built 11 billion toilets in next five years to end open defecation in India. That translates into 1 new toilet being built every second…which further translates into while you finish reading this article around 150 toilets has been built… woahhh…!

These are only few mentioned and There are numerous more hindrances in the way of “Clean India” And so what remains to be seen is whether these rules deliver on its promise of “Clean India”? Yes, we can volunteer for two weeks and clean our streets and society but where the garbage will go? We can build 11 billion toilets, but can we inspire an entire generation to change? These questions are still to be answered.
