Are you being harassed?

People work to earn money. Everyone wants to survive in this competitive, expensive world. We try to land in the best MNC to earn fat salary and mouth watering incentives. But is it so easy to sustain there? What is the price you pay to succeed in your professional life?

Well, its obvious you will be loaded with enormous work and unreachable deadlines. You have to win the number game and satisfy your boss. That is not the end. Top of it you get harassed. YES! Getting harassed at workplace is a grave matter of concern. This exploitation can be either emotional, verbal, physical or even sexual! The harassment can be either by top level management or fellow colleagues. Removing frustration and bitching is a common site in office. Spreading rumors and linking co workers is also another shameful act.

Bullying at workplace refers to any intentional behavior directed towards an employee that can hamper, humiliate or embarrass him. It is a real problem for workers which can come from colleagues, managers or senior persons. It’s not so simple to deal with bullying. It can lead the person to depression, demoralize him and degrade his performance.

Your boss can also make you slog for that extra buck. If you are a marketing guy, you might be asked to visit two clients located miles apart on the same day. Traveling will take a toll on your body plus you wont get enough time to have your meals also. But why would your boss care? He is bothered with numbers! Give him the business and secure your place, that is the funda!!

If you have faced any of the above, then yes you are a victim of workplace harassment!

So how do we deal with it?

First of all understand why are you being bullied. Workplace bullies try to intimidate and manipulate you to pull you down. This happens because of pure jealousy and sense of competition. If you are performing well, you will be targeted as everyone is busy running the rat race of survival. DO NOT let it hamper you. You give your best and prove your worth.

Secondly, make your points clear during your interview. If you have any health or traveling issues it should be clarified before joining the company as no one will give a damn about this later. Also make sure that the targets which you are given are a bit realistic and you can discuss with you manager regarding the same!

On the other hand if your managers are stressing you out then its better to confront the matter to the Human Resource team. The HR team is supposed to solve your workplace issues. Confide your problems in them or have a calm talk with you manager. Let him know your concern.

If your employer is paying you, he will obviously expect results. But this results should not be at the cost of your emotions. Your self esteem is equally important. So try to fight this office bullies and learn to survive!
