
10 sports in India Which Deserves Better Coverage and Appreciation
Success is not the end word for many sports in India and sportspersons related with those sports. One particular game is taking away all the limelight despite not being the national sport of this country.
There are many sports, which need the proper media attention and deserve more appreciation. These sports have earned more laurels to the country than the sport followed by millions. But there are no proper and honest efforts from the people and the media to highlight their efforts. So, world champions and gold medallists take the back seats in the minds of ‘patriotic’ Indians.
1) Chess

Five time world title holder, former world champion and grand master Vishy Anand is the flag bearer of the country. Also, there are scores of Grand Masters and Woman Grand Masters representing India at the top levels. But broadcasters turn a blind eye to this sport sighting duration of the game. They don’t even bother to take blitz chess or rapid chess into their account.
2) Hockey

The national game of India and one of the most neglected game. Despite current hockey league and other successful international outings of the national team, this sport is still waiting for its due.
3)Wrestling

Indian ‘Pahelwani’ has a rich tradition because of the legends like Gama Pahalwan and Gobor Goho The power of Indian wrestlers are growing day by day as they count their growing medals tally in each year. From Olympic to World championships, wrestlers like Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt and many others are bringing back the old glories. Despite all these achievements wrestlers and wrestling are not grabbing the headlines on a daily basis.
4) Squash

Cyrus Poncha, Ritwik Bhattacharya, Saurav Ghosal , Joshna Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Sandhu all are winning top level international tournaments over the years. It seems that their hard works and winning streaks are not good enough to get the attention of media and the people in general.
5) Tennis

In this sport we always had the class. But in recent years Indian tennis has evolved and improved drastically. Leander Paes with 15 Grand Slams and Mahesh Bhupathi with 12 set the benchmark. Recently, Sania Mirza tops the ranking in doubles. Yet, in national level there is very little appreciation to praise the new talents.
6) Badminton

Prakash Padukone was our first champion in this sport winning All-England Championship. Now it is Saina Nehwal who grabbed the No1 spot as the first Indian woman in world badminton stage. But broadcasters are not ready to pay attention to these achievements. So, players like P.Kashyap, Jwala Gutta and other budding players are left in the lurch.
7) Woman’s Cricket

The most neglected one in comparison with its male version. Players like Jhulan Goswami, Mithali Raj and other players have earned their names in the international arena. Undisputed champions of Asia cup and twenty 20 International this version needs some respect and coverage.
8) Archery

Earlier we had one Arjun and these day we have many. Indian archers are delivering with gold and silver in numerous championships around the world, yet they are not given due importance. Indian archers like are scaling new heights without the accolades they deserve.
9) Shooting

Abinav Bindra’s first gold in the Olympics has failed to change the scene. Shooters like- Gagan Narang, Yashvradhan Rathod, Jitu Rai and others are winning world almost in each competition they are taking part. Unfortunately, people fail to notice their achievements as they don’t get their credit due to the lack of proper coverage and awareness.
10) Boxing

Despite the huge successes in international rings, Indian boxers, both men and women do not qualify for the prime time sports broadcasting list. From Mary Kom, Vijender Singh to Akhil Kumar and Sarita Devi all of them have acquired winning podium positions. Unlucky for them those podium positions are not enough to get the prime coverage and respect.
India must focus to infuse the excitement, awareness and much deserved respect to these sports and its players. Else, it will be a no show in the future. The talents will die out of disrespect.
