Anglo Indians

Aug 2, 2014

Anglo Indians are the people of European descent born in India who are British from paternal side. Between 18th to 20th century they were referred specially as British people working in India. They are basically the Christian urban dwellers. It is a minor community widely spread all over the world and they are the proud bearers of British name and Indian ancestry. Their presence is found in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. English is their native language. They are meat lovers and are famous for cuisines like Pork Roast, Ball Curries, Lamb Curries and many more. Their speech, dress and religion has all served to further segregate Anglo-Indians from their native population.

Whereas today, the Anglo-Indian identity is diminishing at a quicker rate. In 1947 when India became independent the population of Anglo Indians was about 3,00,000. However after independence, the social status of Anglo-Indians declined sharply, because of which many families migrated abroad and their daughters got married to other community boys. Their population today varies from 30,000 to 1,50,000 in India.

People who have found new lives abroad have merged into their western mainstream culture. Other than the nostalgic memories possessed by the older generation there is nothing much left to cherish. Their Indian past has faded slowly. In India their community has become indistinguishable from their Indian counterparts. Their women today dress up in saree and salwar kameez too. They also listen to bollywood music and watch bollywood movies. English still remains their first language but they even speak the local vernacular language with equal fluency.

The Anglo Indian communities every year hold a social gathering of their community so that at least once a year all their members come together in harmony. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Canada. Since 3 years this day is celebrated in Mumbai. They organize community dinner, fashion shows, dance etc.

Even though they are less in number, they are distinct in their own way. They still make it a point to keep their race alive by organizing such events. It is truly commendable the way they gel with each other.
