From brutal rape cases to the typical domestic violence, patriarchy has done quite a lot against the Indian women. But at the same time it is equally important to understand that the dominant Indian norm of patriarchy is actually harming Indian men also and that too quite a lot. And it is because of this culmination of several factors that calls for the urgency of having a society that is essentially based on the norms of feminism. Being a man in India, is definitely great and the quite a lot advantageous as well; as that lets men to avail advantages like opting for the best job or the most preferred career choices. But at the same time, it is also quite a lot disadvantageous. From embodying tons of assumptions related to emotional strength to physical strength, Indian men actually have to endure quite a lot, quite like the Indian women. Here are some of the most apt reasons that can clearly reveal how patriarchy is actually damaging the Indian society at least for the men.
1 Because As Per Patriarchy, Men Are Emotionless
Phrases like “mard ko dard nahi hota” and “kya ladki ke jaise rota hai” are actually quite common in India, unfortunately even today. As per the set-up patriarchal norms, Indian men are supposed to be the epitome of having no emotions. From suffering a heartbreak to suffering a cardiac arrest, Indian men are always expected to be staying strong, no matter how much they are actually dying from inside. Also abiding with this absolutely illogical principle, even the little boys in India are nurtured in such a typical way that they are made to believe that they have to be strong and the very act of their crying in public or elsewhere shall be deemed as a “girly” act. While expecting tear ducts to stay always dysfunctional, Indian men definitely have to undergo a great deal of emotional turmoil.
2 Because As Per Patriarchy, Men Are Supposed To Be Bread Earners For The Family
Seriously, our society is actually heading to nowhere, at least here in the current Indian society. Already being an educated and a civilized society, most of the Indian men are made to believe from their very childhood days that they HAVE to be the bread earners, that ultimately leads them to choose a tiresome yet handsome paying job over their passions. At the same time, this also leads them to believe, at least for many men, that women are supposed to be dependent on them; which again makes them toil harder like never before. And it is this stereotype or rather an illogical notion that further creates rifts in their marital lives where most of the husbands are often seen spending more time in offices instead of sparing some quality time with the family.
3 Because As Per Patriarchy, Male EGO Has To Be There
Male ego or man ego may at once seem quite a trivial term but is actually quite a lot harmful. It is this male ego that has actually created quite a lot of cases including those of brutal rapes like the Nirbhaya case along with quite a lot many acid attacks. One of the biggest example of such a case is that of Sonali Mukherjee in 2003, when three men simply came and poured acid on her face, when she fast sleeping. When asked for the reason, the men said that they just wanted to teach her a lesson because apparently Sonali was arrogant since she rejected the proposal of her prime attacker Tapas Mitra; which also led the three attackers to sexually harass her. When they checked that their motives turned unsuccessful, the three simply attacked Sonali with acid. And all these she had to endure when she was only 18 years old. Quite similar is the case of Nirbhaya when she was brutally raped only because she was travelling with a male friend; because again as per patriarchy, women are supposed to live indoors after 8 pm. The main reason behind such cases is actually because of the male ego which is an unfortunate by-product of the Indian patriarchal society.
4 Because As Per Patriarchy, Men Mustn’t Love Cooking Or Mustn’t Like Shopping
Quite like the suppression of the active tear ducts, as per Indian patriarchy, men are only supposed to love a certain sphere of activities that strictly may include sports or knowing about cars. And in case any man likes cooking, shopping, dancing, or any so-called “feminine” stuff, then the he must get all ready for listening to some real shit, that comes directly because of patriarchy.
5 Because As Per Patriarchy, Men Are Often Considered As Price Tags
And when it’s time for the men to settle down, most of the families judge men based on the salaries; the higher the salary, the better is the candidate for the daughter. Often a man’s credibility is based on his chosen brands. It actually hardly matters if a man is a good man from heart or at least based on the personality. If he is unable to reach that “upper” status via his salary, he is not at all an eligible candidate at least for marriage. Now we can understand how the popular phrase comes up that says, “agar degree nahi mili toh koi baap apna ladki nahi dega.”
6 Because As Per Patriarchy, A Man Must Always Earn More Than His Wife
Exactly, when it’s time for an Indian man to settle down, he must always make sure that he earns more than his wife. Again all because he is expected to be the bread earner. It is only he who has to pay the bills, and buy stuff for his children, It is only he who has to make sure that his family can afford to have everything only because of him. And this very stupid notion hits directly against the women as well.
7 Because As Per Patriarchy, Men Are Always The Supporters Of Their Old Parents
Yeah, it is because of patriarchy that most of the Indian parents consider their sons as simple long-term assets with respect to their old age. No we are actually not saying that men musn’t do so. But doesn’t this notion helps creating an easy path for many women as well? And in case if by any chance, a daughter takes care of her parents, due to some issues from the part of the son, get ready to get glued with some really stupid comments.
8 Because As Per Patriarchy, It Is Only Men Who Must Propose
You like a girl and know that she also likes you quite a lot, get ready to propose her because yeah she won’t do it. And God forbid, in case you are quite reserved with respect to showing emotions, get ready to be termed with phrases like “kya ladki ke jaise sharmata hai,” which ultimately makes the girl also to keep waiting.
9 Because As Per Patriarchy, Men Are Always Supposed To Be Protectors
Indian men are not only told to believe that they are supposed to earn as much as possible, but are also made to believe that they are always supposed to be protecting the women around. What’s worse is the fact that if a man actually tries to do so, they are termed ‘sexist’ and in case they don’t do, they are termed irresponsible.
Seriously being a man, at least in India, is actually quite a lot difficult. All the men out there, be proud of yourselves and just be what you are!
